One of our main focus areas In Hand in Hand SA is the development of skills and competencies of our beneficiaries to enable them to take greater control of their own lives and contribute to inclusive local development. Through social mobilisation interventions, we build inclusive and competent communities that will be able to identify viable and desirable interventions, drive implementation in their communities and ensure that the interventions/programmes benefit the most vulnerable households which are integral to capacity building.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

 The shortage of entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial skills in Southern Africa is evident and Hand in Hand SA has realised this gap. We strive to create and increase economic opportunities as well as facilitate access to markets by providing support and access to critical information about markets. We achieve this by sharing information on key levers such as the type of goods in demand, quality standards, branding and presentation requirements, and pricing. We are keen to deepen our focus in this area by encouraging entrepreneurs to leverage technology to participate in markets.

FINANCIAL LITERACY

For many unemployed people, particularly the young, job search assistance and other workplace-related training opportunities will enable the acquisition of skills and workplace experience that is important for them to access formal skills-biased jobs. We will continue to deploy a holistic approach to engaging key stakeholders and communities in enterprise support, training support, community advocacy, and awareness campaigns.

GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

HIH provides support and raises awareness of gender-based violence(GBV) through various projects, training and support programmes that offer men, women, and children the platform to voice out their experiences and opinions for the prevention of GBV. GBV refers to abusive behavior exerted towards an individual or group of people due to their perceived or factual sexual orientation, gender, and/or identity.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

To improve decision-making processes, Hand in Hand SA has embedded a research and knowledge utilisation culture as one of the main focus Pillars. Our research thrust has an internal and external focus. Internally we will ensure that we conduct and leverage research in our programme design, hereby improving the implementation of our activities. Externally, we will conduct commissioned research, with the aim of building a resource centre that creates value for stakeholders on various social development.

SPORTS AND RECREATION

Hand in Hand Sports and Recreation provides and promotes gender equality and empowerment for girls, women, and youth.

The use of sports in our existing development programs such as our youth employment initiatives and skills development for migrant children and girls has proven to be effective by challenging gender stereotypes and impacting not only the participating individuals but also communities and local institutions.

HIV COMBINATION PREVENTION

HIH will be supporting Adolescent Girls and Young Women in targeted HIV hotspots with the aim to increase retention in school, decrease HIV incidence, teenage pregnancy, and gender-based violence, and Increase economic opportunities for young women and girls.
